In July 2026, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) hosted the Research4Life Global Partners’ Meeting at its Geneva headquarters, bringing partners together to celebrate the initiative’s 25th anniversary and explore the future of equitable access to scientific and technical knowledge.

eral for the IP and Innovation Ecosystems Sector, delivered opening remarks highlighting the importance of access to knowledge in enabling researchers to innovate, institutions to strengthen their capabilities and communities to develop solutions that respond to local needs.
Research4Life provides opportunities for researchers to innovate, institutions to grow, and communities to develop solutions that respond to their own needs. The program has contributed to significant increases in scientific publishing, stronger research capacity, and greater participation of women in science.
Research shows that access through Research4Life is associated with major gains in research output. Scientific publishing increased by up to 75% in the developing countries benefiting from the program. Furthermore, research institutions participating in Research4Life experienced up to a 30% increase in publications with at least one female author.
WIPO contributes to the partnership through ARDI (Access to Research for Development and Innovation) and, in collaboration with partner UN agencies and publishers in Research4Life, provides access for over 12,000 institutions across developing countries to more than 250,000 academic and professional resources.
During the two-day meeting, participants reflected on the partnership’s achievements and heard inspiring stories from Country Connectors and researchers. Discussions focused on equity, artificial intelligence, scientific publishing and the future of global collaboration. These conversations reinforced the importance of ensuring that knowledge remains accessible to all.
The meeting brought together Research4Life’s United Nations partners – WIPO, the World Health Organization (WHO), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the International Labour Organization (ILO) and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) – alongside the Research4Life Executive Council, Cornell University, Yale University, the International
Association of Scientific, Technical and Medical Publishers (STM), and hundreds of publishing partners, Country Connectors, universities, users, and all those whose commitment has helped make the partnership a global success over the past quarter century.
As technology continues to evolve at an unprecedented pace, our shared responsibility is to ensure that talent, innovation and scientific potential are never limited by geography or income.
