The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) training seminar on Patent Analytics was held at the Brazilian National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) offices in Rio de Janeiro, on February 27-29, 2024. The seminar was in co-operation with the Brazilian Forum of Innovation and Technology Transfer Managers (FORTEC), with support from Funds-In-Trust Japan Industrial Property Global.

The purpose of this training seminar was to provide training to staff in TISCs to be able to assist local users to effectively access, search and analyze technological and business trends found from data in patent databases.

The seminar was opened with welcome speeches from Mr. Alexandre Dantas, Director of Patents, INPI, Brazil; Mr. Gesil Sampaio Amarante Segundo, President, FORTEC, Brazil; Mr. Takashi Manabe, Consul General of Japan in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Ms. Isabella Pimentel, Counsellor, WIPO Brazil Office, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; and Mr. Christopher Harrison, Patent Analytics Manager, WIPO. The training seminar was attended by 41 participants (36 from Brazil, 3 from Chile, 2 from Peru).

This seminar was the very first deployment of WIPO’s new patent analytics board game, "Patent Quest: Navigating Innovation Horizons", which had been refined following feedback from its pilot launch event in South Africa in January 2024. It highlights the positive feedback received from participants, emphasizing the game's effectiveness in teaching patent analytics concepts while maintaining engagement. WIPO provided a series of presentations on the main steps in patent analytics, followed by hands-on workshops, where participants developed mini patent analytics reports.
