Research4Life: Access to knowledge helps close gender gaps in science

Research4Life: Access to knowledge helps close gender gaps in science

The WIPO Assistant Director-General for the IP and Innovation Ecosystems Sector, Mr. Marco Alemán, has stated that the Research4Life Program, a UN-lead partnership co-run by World Intellectual Property Organization – WIPO, World Health Organization, FAO, UN Environment Programme, International Labour Organization and leading academic publishers – provides universities and research institutions in developing countries, free or low-cost access to thousands of scientific journals. This digital access equips women scientists to write stronger proposals, connect with collaborators and publish at international standards.

A new WIPO study confirms that research institutions joining Research4Life saw:

- Up to 30% more publications with at least one female author; and
- Up to 9% growth in the share of women in all credited authors.

These results demonstrate how affording women scientists access to the latest research empowers them to publish more and become more visible in academia, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.

WIPO experts, Alexander Cuntz, Alessio Muscarnera and Julio D. Raffo were responsible for this valuable contribution, which highlights how digital access to knowledge is key to building stronger and more inclusive innovation ecosystems worldwide.
